Obie from 'Living Single' Was Once Seriously Injured in Near-Fatal Car Crash

John Henton who played Obie Jones in "Living Single" survived a fatal crash that almost ended his life; he had life-changing injuries instead.

In the ‘90s, "Fox" TV series "Living Single" went from being an underdog to becoming one of the most watched sitcoms of that decade. It featured six African-American comedians, and the story centers around four single ladies living in New York City.

HENTON'S LIFE CHANGING CRASH

However, actor John Henton who played Obie Jones had gone to a party to celebrate Halloween, and since it was his first summer off, he drank more than he should have. On his way out, a limo driver offered to take him home, but Henton refused the kind gesture and got into his Acura NSX.

The comedian said his memory after that is vague, but he found out he crashed into another car, and the only reason Henton is alive is that he put on his seat belt with his last shred of sanity.

He was heavily intoxicated and ran into the rear of another car before smashing into a concrete wall. The driver of the other vehicle was treated at the scene and released, as he suffered minor injuries. The actor's family stayed with him through his recovery and a lot of costars visited.

There were rumors that he had lost his eyes which was addressed by his publicist Wendy Zocks. According to her, Henton only damaged his eye socket which was corrected with plastic surgery. He had to go to rehab classes to prevent drunk driving and also performed community service in California.

HEALING PROCESS

Henton underwent face reconstruction surgery; he told his audience that it's a blessing the doctors were able to put him back together. He, also expressed regret about the accident, viewing his decision to drive himself as stupid.

The actor-comedian recovered from his ordeal by focusing on his life and getting back to 100%. Outside of his career, he has a daughter, Nicole, with actress, Michelle Delaney.

Although he didn't die, the fatal crash cost him to lose eleven teeth and also, he broke his two legs. A year later, the actor who got lucky was able to joke about it in a stand-up comedy show.

Henton told his audience that after he woke up from his coma, he felt refreshed, but won't recommend it to anyone. The comedian then became serious when he revealed what caused his accident.

PERSONAL LIFE

Delaney is 18 years his junior, and the comedian has not spoken about his relationship with her in recent times; therefore he is considered to be single.

Henton's career started in 1985 after he moved to Los Angeles. The Ohio native's journey into comedy which began in 1991 after he won the "Johnny Walker National Comedy Search." Aside from "Living Single," the father-of-one has starred in movies such as: "The Parkers" and "The Hughleys." He returned to the later after his accident (which he also performed thirty days of community service for.)
